– Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

October 15th is celebrated as World Students’ Day in honor of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, a renowned Indian scientist and the 11th President of India. He was born on October 15th, 1931, and dedicated his life to education and students.

Dr. Kalam served as the President of India from 2002 to 2007 and was widely loved as the “People’s President.” After his term, he focused on education, writing, and public service. He received many awards, including the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. This day is a tribute to his hard work and dedication to education.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s inspirational journey from his modest childhood in Rameshwaram has left an indelible mark on countless students from rural India, urging them to “Dream Big.” Growing up in a simple family, he faced financial constraints but developed a strong work ethic, which was pivotal in shaping his future.

Driven by his childhood dream of becoming a pilot, Kalam’s passion for aviation led him to pursue a degree in aeronautical engineering. Despite financial hurdles, a scholarship to the Madras Institute of Technology changed the trajectory of his life, allowing him to pursue his dreams in aerospace engineering. His illustrious career at ISRO and DRDO, marked by significant contributions to India’s space and defense capabilities, showcased his brilliance and dedication.

As the 11th President of India, Dr. Kalam’s interactions with students across the nation, coupled with his autobiography “Wings of Fire,” made him a role model for rural youth. His story stands as a powerful testament to how determination and hard work can enable individuals, regardless of their humble beginnings, to reach the highest pinnacles of success and inspire others to do the same.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam had a deep-seated belief in the importance of education and the role of educated youth as the foundation of a developing nation. He was not just a scientist and leader but cherished the title of “teacher” above all else.

In his view, the Indian education system needed reform, with a focus on making knowledge more practical and applicable. He advocated for competency-based education at the school level, enabling students to understand and apply their learning from an early age. He stressed that education should not only produce job seekers but also job creators. Dr. Kalam emphasized the need for students to receive special training alongside regular school programs, equipping them with specific skills and certifications. These additional skills not only enhance employability but also offer practical insights into real-world industries. He believed that fostering these skills at a young age would nurture entrepreneurial spirit among India’s youth.

“The  best brains of the nation may be found on the last benches of the classroom.”
