The Rise of Ameen Sayani: A Radio Maestro

One of the most celebrated radio personalities in India is Ameen Sayani. He was born in Mumbai on December 21, 1932. He was raised in a literary family; his brother, Hamid Sayani, was a well-known English broadcaster, and his mother, Rehbar, was the editor of a newsletter.

Ameen Sayani’s distinctive style became prominent when All India Radio (AIR) started to broadcast Bollywood music, serving as a forum for the promotion of straightforward Hindustani music that connected with listeners all throughout the country.

In 1952, Sayani set off on his voyage with Radio Ceylon. He began his career as an English broadcaster before switching to Hindi once India gained freedom. ‘Geetmala,’ a breakthrough show that aired for the first time in December 1952, brought him enormous acclaim. With its songs, the show rose to cultural prominence in South Asia.

Sayani’s ‘Geetmala’ demonstrated his profound comprehension of the changing music scene in addition to being a musical spectacle. The popularity of the program cemented his reputation as a radio maestro. It was in operation from 1952 until 1994, and then again in 2000–2001 and 2001–2003. Although the show’s name changed a little, its concept stayed the same.1
